Risks of vaccine-preventable conditions in older adults with multi-morbidities

Course Details

Multi-morbidity increases with age. In 2017–18, people aged ≥ 65 years were more likely to have ≥ 2 of 10 selected chronic conditions compared with people aged 15–44 (51% compared with 12%). Unfortunately, only 51% of older Australian adults receive all government-funded vaccination each year, compared to 93% of Australian children and 73% of Australian adolescents. Recommendation from a health professional was shown to be the most important factor influencing the decision to immunise.

Join us for a discussion with Dr Rod Pearce and Dr Paul Russo about healthy ageing and the impact that ageing and multi-morbidities has on both an individual’s susceptibility to infectious diseases and decreased response to vaccination.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review aspects of age-related decline in immunity.
  2. Discuss some of the vaccine-preventable infectious diseases in older adults with multi-
    morbidities.
  3. Describe the risk of herpes zoster in older adults with multi-morbidities.
