Aortic Stenosis in Men: The Silent Threat

Course Details

Learn to recognise and assess aortic stenosis in men, apply key echocardiographic thresholds, and navigate referral pathways for valve replacement while supporting GP-led follow-up care.

This is a RACGP CPD module with an allocated 0.5 hour of Education Activities (EA) and 1 hour of Reflective Practice (RP) under the RACGP 2023-25 CPD program.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify key red flags (exertional dyspnoea, angina, syncope) and typical murmurs in men when seen in primary care
  2. Apply basic echo thresholds (e.g., Vmax, mean gradient, aortic valve area) to distinguish mild/moderate from severe AS—including awareness of low-flow/low-gradient patterns—and decide when urgent referral is warranted
  3. Discuss appropriate referral pathways for valve replacement SAVR/TAVI) via a Multidisciplinary Heart-Team, and outline a practical GP follow-up plan for patients

This activity is presented by Dr Jason Sharp, a Structural & Interventional Cardiologist from the Sydney Adventist Hospital.

This presentation was recorded at the San GP Education event ‘A Focus on: Men’s Health’ in June 2025.
